Who We Are

We sing to bear witness to the power of music to transform the world–or at least our corner of it. We strive for musical excellence and providing both entertaining and thoughtful performances for our audience.

Founded in 1986, our culture is steeped in the women’s, lesbian community. Members identify in various ways on the gender continuum; we have members who are cis, trans, nonbinary and agender. We welcome all! Everyone is on a journey. Everyone has a story. As we get to know each other, we share those stories. We respect our likeness and celebrate our differences. We listen and speak our truth with kindness. We practice forgiveness as we learn to speak a language that serves us individually and as a whole.

We reach out to the greater community of Portland, Oregon by offering special performances to some who have not heard a chorus like ours, by providing panels and tables sharing information about our choir, and by acting individually and together in service. See where we've been: PLC In the Spotlight

The Portland Lesbian Choir is a proud member of GALA Choruses. GALA Choruses leads the North American GLBT choral movement and cultivates the artistic development of 10,000 singers from more than 190 choruses in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Mary Mccarty, director

Mary has cultivated a lifelong passion for music via the choral and instrumental arts, performing on both sides of the baton as a singer, flutist and conductor within a wide range of ensembles taking her from her roots in upstate New York to her adopted home in Oregon. She is honored by the opportunity as the director of PLC to unite her love of music with the joy of creating community through choral collaboration. In addition to her work with PLC, Mary also serves as the Conducting Associate for the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus. Mary holds a music degree from the State University of New York at Potsdam. Mary’s dedication, skill and passion has helped PLC grow in musical excellence and PLC is so thankful to have her share her gifts with the choir.

Kim Horenstein, Accompanist

Kim is a native of Oregon and has been playing piano since the age of six. She began accompanying choirs in high school and has served as accompanist for the Portland Lesbian Choir as well as Bridges Vocal Ensemble. Kim has arranged music for both groups and has written original music. Kim happily returned to her PLC family as accompanist in 2012 after a 10-year hiatus raising her two boys. PLC is grateful to this accomplished musician for her steadfast presence and keyboard prowess.

Veronica Darling is a Pacific Northwest native, and has been performing locally from a young age. She graduated from Battle Ground High School, in southwestern Washington, where she performed with the treble, symphonic, and jazz choirs under the direction of Darcy Schmitt. She was also the featured vocalist with the Battle Ground High School Jazz Band during the 1997-98 season, under the direction of Gregory McKelvey. Following her graduation from Washington State University (Political Science/Pre-Law, Philosophy), where she was a frequent karaoke performer, she attended the UCLA School of Law, graduating in 2007. After practicing municipal law and complex commercial litigation in Los Angeles for nearly a decade, Veronica returned to Portland in the fall of 2015 to become a part-owner and in-house legal counsel to a local cannabis company, Peak Extracts. She joined PLC in the Spring of 2017, serving as Alto Lead, Alto Representative, and PLC Secretary prior to being elected President for the 2018-2019 season. PLC is thrilled to have her in leadership!
